Giant companies have begun using hydraulic mining—massive water cannons that blast entire hillsides apart in search of gold. The rivers are choked with mud and mercury, turning once-clear waters into toxic sludge. Miners work in brutal conditions, often for long hours with little pay, no safety gear, and barely enough food. Many are immigrants, drawn by the promise of gold fever, only to be exploited and trapped in poverty.
